Term : Ion Temperature Gradient Instability
|
Definition : Also known as the ITG Instability or ITG Mode, this instability driven by the free energy in the ion pressure profile is presently believed to be responsible for much of the energy transport in toroidal fusion plasmas. The ITG mode appears to be suppressed by sheared plasma flows, resulting in improved confinement.
